planet10,
you don´t need a really big lathe.

I use this: http://www.killinger.de/km2000s/km2000s.htm

OK, i would like to have a bigger one, but they get very expensive.

The problem if you want to turn a wooden horn is only the inside. How to get rid of the material in the inside that should be away. You can´t work with a hand - holded tool very deep inside the piece you turn. So if you piece of wood is too long you have to make some parts and glue them togher - like prototype one. Two will be one part wood, one aluminium. An other way would be to make a special drill to drill out the material, but this counts only if you want to build a lot of similar horns.

I would also like to make some not circular horns, but i have no drawing at the moment, and i´m not able to do the calculation . I wan´t to build one like this: http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/Pioneer/Images/IndustrialTADProduct/TH-4001a2.jpg

anyone want´s to make the drawing?

Is this what you're looking for?

I built some of these out of HDF. Very, very good, but not as good as the round trax in the opinion of the few people I've read, who've actually built both. The Arai horns are a 290Hz hypex. Around Christmas my 270Hz trax horns will be finished, as so I'll try to compare them. I might use mine as the topend for the rears in an HT. Pity to waste them.

I've read that Yuichi-san's 290's are very similar in profile to the TAD's, but TAD are a little hard to get much info out of.

Plans for them can be found <a href="http://joelist.free.fr/Wooden%20Horn%20Construction%20Plan/">here</a>. They're unfortunately not very clear, but I managed to work with it, and as a carpenter, I make a good fisherman. There's also the plan for the 300Hz expo horn there too.

Cheers

Brett, yes like that. I know the pdf. For me the pdf contains not enough information to build one. Only way would be print 1:1 and use it as a template.

There is no drawing of the fins inside the horns. I don´t know whats hypex. A hperbolic shape?

I will go on with my circular tratrix and if there will be a good enough drawing of something like the Arai 290 / TAD horn, fitting for TD2001 driver, i´ll try that too.

I used to have another set of better drawings before my recent HDD failure. If I find them I'll email them to you.

I calculated the fins dimensions. Rotten job I don't want to do again.
Yes, hypex=hyperbolic

The A290 and A300 are for 50 mm drivers. The A480 is for 25 mm.

Cheers

This weekend: preparing wood for the next circulars. 4 of these blocks in the picture (only 2 shown because the others are still in the braces) , every made out of four pieces of cherrywood.

situation update: in my last post i wrote

... have to wait for the driver units

this may take long. I ordered the TAD´s two month before, TAD in europe has none in stock sayd the speaker - dealer today.
It seems TAD USA has also none in stock, else they would have delivered a pair in the last weeks. So he meant it may take two month or so in addition until they make new ones - ?

I wait.

Two month to make the 828´s more rigid and build the short horns.

Hi slowmotion,
I did not have time to listen much until now. And i have not much experience to descibe in words what i hear. I can tell something about my first emotional impressions when listening to Beethoven some hours go. It was fear. The feeling is if the music gets louder it hit you...

hi mikee, i will build some more wooden horns when i have enough time in the summer. No i don´t run tube amps because i´m not able to build them. So far i use Zen lite, v2 and V4.

Next larger step is to build the big enclosures ready. Have to buy some more birch multiplex plywood for this.

I hope for the passdiy active crosssover to come soon to be enabled to biamp then.

hmm. i tried to do some measurement with hobbybox 4.0 to make a frequency respone plot, but the plot looks very different each time i change something. There is a lot to tune like fft 64,128,...,2048,...,16384, egalistation no, 1/3 octave, spline, recangular, blackman, Hanning, Hamming etcetc. To make a compareable plot what should i choose? else i think the response of microphone and soundcard is not good enough for real measurement. This one is with my croco - wired estimated xover, no egalisation, in a much to small room for this speakers. I fear it contains not much infomation.
