Default Wich Scan Speak Bass/Mid

Hello,

Which 18 cm/7inch bass/mid from Scan Speak would you recommend for a neutral and dynamic sounding 2-Way (floorstander or monitor)?

The new sliced paper cone-type

or

the older Kevlar cone-typ.

The new sliced paper-cone seems to have a couple of advantages (open spider, glass fiber voice coil resulting in a lower Rms), but I heard that the older Kevlar-type is supposed to be very good, too.

I plan on using a Scan Speak tweeter (ring radiator, silk dome or metal dome).

Thanks alot,

Kal

check my fellow countryman Troels Gravesen´s excellent website. He has used both the "old" and the sliced versions:

good luck!

Just finished Troels SP95's using the sliced paper 6.5".
These are amazing speakers.
They are replacements for my old JBL 4311B's.
Without doing A/B comparison I don't think there would be much between them re bass extension.
Amazing considering ones a 12" and the others a 6.5".
In every other area (accuracy, treble extension, smooth response) the SP's win without even trying.

Oh, those are the old ones now, and a very long time since they were news, maybe like 10 years gone by now
The new ones does not have sliced cones
Best ScSp midrange at the moment is probably new 12MU illuminator

But Scanspeak and Tympany have split, so it might pay to watch what happens in near future, Im sure something is going on

I have just finished the Amish 45/97 from the afore mentioned Troel's website and that uses an old school 8545, which was considered one of the best midrangers of its time and found its way into many commercial products such as the Wilson Watt / Puppy. Its an excellent performer even now, to the extent that it has been cloned!
