Unhappy Floorstander

Hi,

I still want to build that 2 way floorstander.

As I said before for a speaker driver I have to pay around 40-50% more
to have it!(import taxes, transport, tip, etc)

For the pair of woofers and tweeters I want to pay around 300$( including the 40-50%). But I will boost the budget a little bit more if there are major improvements!

I believe that an 8" woofer in a 40-55L enclosure would be best for the job because it reproduces HF better than a 10" one!
But if you know a good 10" that could be crossed at 1,5khz(this means low HF distorsions, good off-axis response, etc.)

Should I expect a F3 close to 30hz and a F12 lower than 20hz, without destroing the transient response?

Also I think that a 1,5Khz Xover point would be more attainable than the old 1,2khz one!

So any other new suggestions for the tweeter and the woofer?
Recently I read about some DIY ribbon tweeters! Is it possible to DIY that? Is it a wise choice?

A general question: Where is better to have the xover point in a 2 way design (closer to 1khz or closer to 3-4Khz, or somewhere else)?

By the way, what software should I use to desgin the crossover, and predict the overall performance?

Thanks!

Check out the following site:

http://www.sound.westhost.com/lr-passive.htm

He shows all of the math and diagrams you will ever need to design your own X-Over. Project 82 on his site is probably the coolest crossover design tool I have ever seen, but be careful about driver burnout (designing a box that allows the crossover to go too low, burning out your tweeter with too much power)

Even cooler, there is a spreadsheet that allows you to place in values for your drivers and model the thiele-small parameters of your box design.

Default Drivers

For driver options in a similar poject, I am considering the XT18WO09-08 and XT19TD00-04 with a crossover at 1.6K. They cost about $300 for two pair. I am working on a LR4 crossover now.

For reference, SelahaAudio uses that woofer in his SA1 design.

It has pretty good reviews.

Thanks for the link with the "Design of Passive Crossovers".

And what about the woofer/tweeter?

As an experienced speaker builder I want to show you my latest design.
It has the looks like the reference plus.. from audiocomponents... but with other units.

Units are:
Scan speak S9700.
Vifa xt18wo09-08 = Closed box
Vifa xt18wh09-08 = Bass-reflex

All measured and a constructed series-filter.
Very good sounding.

Let you know more tomorrow (if I have more time)
It's also going as a building project in a shop in Haarlem.
(see link from my ID)

Sincerely,
Remco

You might want to check out Seas newer CA22RNX. It looks to have a smooth enough roll off to be used in a two way but would produce very deep bass in a 50 to 70 liter cabinet because of its parameters and Xmax.

kevyjo, CA22RNX has a very nice FR but needs a large box!
The maximum volume that I could use is 55L!
