Default project: HUGE

hey all im dan, im completely new to the custom audio scene, i like almost all kinds of music except for dreaded pop, western/country and opera, i would like to build a couple of HUGE front speakers, optimum performance is not the ticket here but obviously i would like a degree of quality, im thinking 2 or 3 subs a piece and drivers/tweeters as well, so 5-7 components per box, im pretty handy with tools so construction wont be a problem, time and money will tho so im looking at doing this over a while, basically electronics is all but lost to me so any help you guys could give me would be appreciated greatly.

cheers, dan

p.s would perspex work for the box ? i reckon it would look awesome

Have you considered PA drivers? No better way to get the volume.

If you're good with tools and really want to rock your face off, what about something like this with the big A4 cabinets with dual 15's and the A7 box with a single 15 and a horn. (disregard the coloured ww units) Does 125 db with about 1kW. Enough to defeather a chicken. Could probably be made for about $3K USD

Are you really dangerous?

I think the Lab's with the A7's would be another good match.

You can always clone Legacy's Whisper

If you don't want as many drivers or something a little simpler, use two (2) 15" Woofers (Adire Tempest) with four (4) 7" Midranges and one nice Tweeter.

Or, do something similar and use AE Speakers Lambda TD Series bass drivers. Be prepared to wait a little while, but the general sentiment is that the Lambda series drivers are well worth the wait.

Hiya Dangerous Dan,
Ya want big? Then check out the Decware modified Jensen Imperial.
I'm currently building 2 of them. Approx 6ft x 3ft x 2ft
horn. 2 x 15 inch drivers per box. The choice of drivers are
academic, using PA type drivers (broad frequency range), you
can get away with using the Imperials as stand alone, full
range speakers. Generally though, a satelite speaker can
handle the mids and high frequency material.

Big boxes, big money. No way around it. And when you start
shoving boards of wood weighing 30kg or more through a saw,
you need a helping hand. Certainly not a walk in the park.

All up finished weight is about 90kg each. I will be finishing these
Imperials shortly and will post pics to this site and my web page.

After some initial listening tests on a half finished speaker, the
question of 'are they worth it'? is answered with a resounding -
ABSOLUTELY!

So get your ideas (and money) together, surf the web, visit local
dj/club scenes and decide exactly what you want. When that is
done, the support you will get from diy and other forums will get
you across the finish line.

Cheers,

Harmless Gary, aka Valiant ap6.

Oh, and here is the Imperial site....
