Default "bookshelf" speaker optimization

I have tried to search for answers with no success. I live in a very small house(600sq. ft.), with my wife and one, soon to be two children. I am thus very limited in my speaker placement. My situation requires that I have my bookshelf speakers in the bookshelf, not on stands. I can adjust the width and height but cannot pull them away from the back wall more than 6-8". I primarily listen to jazz, some classical, a little reggae, some rock. My room is 11x12 wth vaulted ceilings.
I currently have energy c3"s and am working on a subwoofer with 2 tc2+ 12"woofers in a 10 cu. ft sealed inclosure in the bottom third of my bookcase. I have my mind set on zaph's all metal seas bookshelf speakers.
My question is what can I do to optimize the sound of my speakers givin my placement issues? I am concerned with muddy bass, smeared imaging.
thanks for any help,
Mordikai

Hi,

as far as I'm aware the only issue is the amount of "baffle step
compensation" (BSD) built into the speaker design. For bookshelf
use the amount should be much less then when optimised for
free space use, however there is a caveat.

Because full free space BSD kills efficiency, (by 6dB), many designs
allegedly for free space use have less BSD, and in some cases the
BSD issue is ignored completely - and these designs need to be
placed near a wall to have decent bass.

You could do a lot worse than investigating Tony Gee's all metal
designs at Homemade HiFi - but the site currently is not online.

/sreten.
