Default interesting 7" from PE

Brousing PE I found this driver:
http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=299-668
I like the large size, smooth response, nice finish, and relatively good xmax.

And the low cost!

I was thinking, these drivers would require a relatively large box? I am thinkin MTM design with a DIY ribbon. If the box is prohibitive, i really love OB loudspeakers, would these be good candidates? Having two would give me large surface area for low frequencies (50hz?). I am thinking a cheap copy of the Linkwitz Phoenix.

Feedback welcome!

If you're going with ribbons, I'd suggest going with proven (measured) low distortion mids.

The rs180 is a very good value considering that it performs very well compared to the seas excels.

BTW, with 3mm xmax, it won't take much to drive that mid into excursion.

Hmmm, I wonder about a mid-low power 6th order bandpass box?

They look pretty smooth up to 2Khz. The Qts doesn't look high enough for open baffle (0.31). Doesn't look too bad though.

Good for the price. Very good in fact. Try TL loading them. Probably a straight, un-tapered quarter-wave pipe would be best, but if you double them up in an MTM layout however, it would be a big box, probably around 20" deep. If that's too bulky for you, go to Martin King's site and get his classic TL alignment tables: http://www.quarter-wave.com/Theory/Alignment_Tables.pdf

Remember when putting the parameters in, if you use two paralleled drivers Sd doubles, as does Vas, while impedence halves.

Regards
Scott

I am a fan of Dayton's RS drivers. Right now i have an rs 12" sub. My mids now are HI-VI B4Ns which i also am very fond of. These dayton mids would be an improvement? Because i have a subwoofer, i would like to put any new drivers in a sealed box for less hassle, and lower distortion. Any thoughts?

Default Almost right for a Spica TC-50 clone

The Spica TC-50 used an Audax woofer that was large for a 6" and 7" drivers seem to be about right, it was also 4 ohm as is this driver. It had similar peaking at the high end and there's a notch filter in the XO. The main issue is that this driver has a much lighter cone at 11g, the Audax was 19g IIRC. The Audax drivers were treated with diluted Elmers glue by Spica, and some mass could be added this way, however these are already treated. The box volume could be increased to bring the closed box resonance back to the same point.
A small tower floorstanding design might make sense.
I wrote this about the TC-50 but the page is inactive due to a lack of interest:

So what if i want to go with a dayton rs driver? which to choose? I have my choice of five to ten inches. I am really interested in a bit more power handling. My B4Ns overexcurt like crazy when i crank it, but sound very very good otherwise. These RS drivers should be an improvement sonically?

Man! i just cannot keep my hands out of the shop!

Tade,
this weekend I'll try to start on a dipole MTM with the rs180+seas TFFC tweet. I'll post some thoughts on it.

Upon initial testing of the rs180 on scrap baffle, the driver is quite revealing and it handles the lower mid/midbass well without a box.
