Default Redback woofers from Altronics & where to buy woofer measuring device in OZ

Hi,

Not sure if anyone here (especially Aussies) would have any experience with redback woofers from Altronics.

When I was looking for a 15" highish sensive 96db+ speaker, I came across the redback woofers in an Altronics catagory and their pricings look is very reasonable - which is a good thing. Though I don't know if I can trust their spec's.

So I have two questions.

1. Anyone here used one of these Redback woofers before and if so, how do you find the sound.

2. Anyone here know where I can buy a woofer testing kit for measuring woofers paramaters locally in Australia.

Cheers,
Michael.

havent heard the redbacks, but if you have a decent sound card and a pc (not mac) you could try out speaker workshop http://www.audua.com It takes a bit of getting used to but once you get the hang of it, its really powerfull

also get the unofficial manual (will save a lot of pain) http://www.audiodiycentral.com/resou...nual%201.0.zip

and check Claudios page: http://www.claudionegro.com/

Tony.

Michael, looking at their other speakers that are familiar, they look fairly expensive for what they are!

There isn't enough info on them to make a good decision.

Looks like a cheap driver that has no right to cost that much!

I would suggest instead looking at Beyma or Eminence. Krix speakers as I recall are also Australian distributors for Beyma, which publish decent info on their drivers, including distortion and power compression info! Many on this forum have used them and have positive things to say about their SQ.

Eminence seem to be very good value for money. They have a few drivers with a very nice smooth and extended response. Delta 12LF you could probably get for about the price of that woofer. It probably has a lot more excursion, certainly a lot more power handling. It has 95db sensitivity and a very smooth response for a PA driver. IIRC it has smooth response up to 2kHz making it relatively easy to work with.

Not sure if we are refering to the same driver, but the one I'm looking at is the C3033 and is only AU$149.00 which I thought is OK for a 15". I would be very interested if you can advise on where in Aus I can get good drivers for a good decent price - I must be paying too much in the past.

I would have too agree with you about Beyma and Eminence. I already have a pair of Eminence Kappa12 and they are nice. I would love to try a pair of Beyma, but I was quote $500+ each which is way too expensive for a driver that I have not heard of before and also it opens up more options for other drivers within that price range.

Thanks,
Michael.

Although CMI are no longer official distributor for Eminence, it is quite highly probably that they still have stock.

I would suggest contacting them direct, who knows what you might find on discount !!!

http://www.cmi.com.au/contact.html

Also, WES have noted some Peerless PA drivers in their catalog. I don't know if they have them yet, they are marked as "Due September 2005". It will certainly be interesting to see what sort of quality they are, so if you do go that way I would be very interested in your thoughts. The 830760 and 830671 are now actually listed on the DST web site !!

Also, Cannon sell Selenium, P-Audio, JBL drivers
Might be worth looking at !

Yes, we are talking about the same driver. It looks like a cheapie! Only 100w power handling, no frequency response shown. xmax is not mentioned.

I was looking at high efficiency 12" drivers a few months ago, hunted some online prices.

For eminence this is what stands out:

Magnum 12HO $274 shipped each - a big solid driver with 600w power hanlding and 4.8mm xmax and a VERY smooth response. It it the cheapest driver I found with a shorting ring!

Some of the more attractive Beyma 12s go for about the same price.

Even a JBL is less than $500! sheeeesh (do a bit more hunting)

The Delta 12 LFA $133 500w and 4.8mm xmax, very smooth as well but no shorting ring and a stamped basket.

These prices are based on the best I could find online, it was a US dealer (not sure who), and I calculated allowing for 5% customs and surface mail shipping (which takes a while), including the exchange rate at the time. I didn't go ahead with it, however. It's something I'd like to do later.

I was looking for drivers with high power handling and xmax with a smooth extended response up to 2kHz.

Don't be too quick to settle on something, and hunt around and heckle for best prices! If you go for something like taht Altronics woofer, you really are settling on something that is cheap because it isn't anything special.
