Another way of looking at this issue that is often overlooked is from the standpoint of distortion (specifically IM distortion). There is a definite trade off between BW and distortion.
For a given radiating area, the IM distortion will increase as the BW of the driver is increased. This was shown in a 1980 Audio mag article (I'll get the equatin later if anyone is interested). The equation showed the relationship between BW, radiating area, excursion, and acoustic output and the IM distortion level given these factors.
