Default The Silverado, a small d'Appolito loudspeaker

I've just posted the full story behind the construction of the Silverado on my website, at the below url.

Excellent work! And it features my fav low cost HF driver

I've been looking for something to build for my cousin and I think this could just be the ticket. Cheap and it looks like it performs well.

One question:

I know you recessed the tweet and surface mounted the mid/bass drivers but have you noticed any untoward effects by doing so? I realise of course that this was in your goals of time alignment.

From the frequency plots I can't see anything that would point to such a thing. Would be interested to hear your thought on the effects if any - afterall it would probably be a different matter if we were talking about diffraction on the tweeter.

Once again excellent write up and thanks for sharing what looks like a very promising design for what is essentially little money.

Thanks ShinOBIWAN,

What can I say, I aim to please? And I can't stand sloppy workmanship so I try to live up to my own standards. As for the tweeter I haven't seen or heard anything during the measurements or when listening to the loudspeakers, the small baffle did worry me a bit, but it turned out not to be a problem at all. Off axis measurements are only slightly off from on-axis.

Nice looking speaker project!

What is the impedance of the speaker? 4ohm?

Hi Russ,

Nominal 6-ohms, it never touches on 4-ohm really.

I know I am reviving a rather dated thread, but I saw your design, and find it extremely interesting. However, I was wondering if you have some thought on whether it is possible to build the Silverado as a sealed speaker, if I were to increase its height into a floor-standing speaker, thereby increasing the volume of the case?

Hi,

I found the comment in the write up that a sealed version would need to
be twice as big hard to fathom. Modelling the driver all sealed versions
have very restricted bass, and a 20L sealed box for 2 doesn't work.

Per driver :
10L sealed is - 6dB at 90Hz and -9dB at 60Hz, Qbox = 0.36.
5L sealed is - 6dB at 87Hz and -9dB at 60Hz, Qbox = 0.41.
2.5L sealed is - 6dB at 87Hz and -10dB at 60Hz, Qbox = 0.5.
1.5L sealed is - 6dB at 87Hz and -11dB at 60Hz, Qbox = 0.6.
1L sealed is - 6dB at 93Hz and -12dB at 60Hz, Qbox = 0.7.

They need to be vented to produce any sembance of bass.
5L per driver needs to be tuned between 40Hz and 50Hz.

rgds, sreten.

A nice looking speaker. Even it is no "real" D'Appolito as the xo-frequency is to high (or the distance of the low/midrange drivers is too wide).
But it seems to work well looking at the measurements.

One way to do a real D'Appolito would be using a fullrange driver as the tweeter with a lower xo-frequency (as we did in our "Sundan").
