Basic vinyl finish, as used by every budget speaker since the late 1970s. Easy to put on, cheap and it looks OK if done properly. The first type you mention -the white one- is frequency used to cover the chipboard of cheap kitchen cupboards too. Not a patch on a real wood veneer of course, but as the blurb says, better than raw MDF (or chipboard)!

I've had no experience in veneering before starting my speaker project, but I can surely say that I'm not affraid of doing veneering in the future with this stuff

Thickness and quality is very good, and so easy to apply with contact glue
