That's far from unusual. Look at the Xmax vs Xmech of most pro drivers http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/290-580.pdf

BTW xmax is +/-30mm for 6.5"!!! Thats nearly as good as the XXX or tumult! |

cant see whats going on under the bottom of the driver - is the spider suspended and the gap is to allow movement
does something but into the bottom - a pole piece maybe they're cool thats for sure |

Never seen those either. By the looks of the cone and front mounting plate they come from the same factory.
