Nice cabinetry! One question - how did you apply the fiberglass reinforcement to the walls? Just lay down woven sheets and coat with epoxy? I am thinking of doing something similar in a sub enclosure, but after pricing epoxy, am not sure if its really more cost effective than just doubling up a given wall.

it's more cost effective... lighter in weight and stronger than wood... it's dampening properties are way worse than MDF though

a $17 per gallon of poleyster resin would do 8 layers of 2 oz chopped mat on 2 of the curved sides

the results are stronger than 3 layers of MDF...

I just laid a coat of resin to the birch form first ... then laid the mat... then brushed more resin on... waited until almost cured then another layer etc

Cool thanks for the info. I don't doubt the stiffness, especially if reinforcing MDF, just that the resin I saw was along the lines of $40 per gallon, and I didnt know how much you actually need. I'll be using ply so I'm going to have to figure out if a 2nd layer of 3/4" ply would be less expensive than a thin layer of resin+mat like you did.

the curved sides are 24x40" tall... I can coat 2 of the sides 8 times with one gallon of resin

www.shopmaninc.com has resin for cheap

ahh I see now, I was looking at epoxies not polyesters, hence the price difference. How was working with the polyester resin? Messy? Gassy? And how long were the curing times?

How did you arrive at the $ amount?

Are you factoring the cost of your labor (300 hrs) into it?

speaker

BTW, an impressive job!

You said

What's with all the filler though? Surely you didn't need that much

My car analogy fits perfect There are tons of show cars that
have gobs of filler to make the body look good, but after paint you never see it.

No it doesn't

Again what does that have to do with anything?

You know its going to be covered up, I know its going to be covered up, hell, we all know that's its going to be covered up, so why point out the obvious?

I only asked about the filler, purely small talk, because it looked like it didn't need that much. Rather than what it seems you thought I said - the filler will be there for the eye to see forever.

As much as I admire a Knight in Shining Armour I think your taking noob's interests too much to heart.
