Default A Fantastic Three Way

Today i listend to the Orpheus by Audes. It's a three way speaker that can be seen here

After listening to Eric Dolphy's "Live at Five Spot Cafe'", I told the owner that i've found my next project. I have about 2,000USD after selling my Thors, nothing wrong with them, I just like a change once in a while. I've decided on woofer, i'll be using the same tweeter as the original (Seas Millenium) and the same 6.5" woofer made by Audes. For the 10" woofer I'll use Seas Excel.
I'm a skilled woodworker, so I'd just copy the original cabinet after making some measurments.
I'd like to ask you about Crossover design. What Kind of XO would you recommend for such speaker?

Thank you.
[I apologize for my english, as it is not my strongest language]

YOu can copy the cabinets but i dont see how you can copy the x-over without opening it up or finding their internal spec sheet.

That's why i ask you guys, I ofcourse can't open them, so i'd like to design couple of alternatives, or use alternatives that you'll suggest, and try to match the sound. they use a 1st order for the bass, a 1st and 3rd for mid and 3rd for treble, as their website states.

why not go active and figure it would from trial and error??? then convert your findings to passive xovers?

mess with it actively to you hit that "audes sound"

why dont you check around on the net for "series x/overs"?, by far the easiest to implement for any app either 2 way or 3 way, there used to be a site run by andy graddon an australian boy from newcastle , check in the diy audio files too, cheers and good luck TC

Default re crossover

With a typical mid driver at that crossover frequency, the 1st. order crossover would in fact more resemble a 3rd. order one when you take the drivers lower roll off into account.
A Vifa 130 type of driver for instance will have a close to ideal 3rd. order responce and an f3 of around 150Hz.when put in a box of around 2.5-3litres, and fed from a 1st. order network, if this is passive it should have a notch filter.
I don't know the parameters of the driver you propose to use, but if it is designed as a dedicated midrange driver it won't vary that much.

Audes specs say that the Orpheus should have a fr +- 2db 41-20k Hz. Just measure the drivers and head for a straight fr with 1. and 3. order networks and the specified crossover points and I'd say you will get pretty close to the original.

Audeses are voiced through extensive listening, You can copy them only visually.

Your clone attempt will probably want a higher order filter on the woofer to mid XO. I'm guessing that their woofer has a really early rolloff to get away with a first order electrical XO and not muddy things up side firing. With the Excel driver's flat response to 1,000, I'd shoot for 4th order Linkwitz-Reilly. (remember that you may not need to use a 4th order electrical filter on the mid's high pass to get 4th order acoustic response. Measurement is your friend.)

BTW, how are you planning to get hold of one of Audes' proprietary midranges?

Thank you for your answers. Audes sells on their website the midrange, you can find it under "SPEAKERS".
Thank you Qwad, i'll look for it.

Ola, what do you mean by that?
