help with older drivers...

While cleaning out the garage, I came across a matching pair of woofers and tweeters, seemingly used in an older two-way design (the tweeter had a simple first order tacked on, I assume the woofer was run full range or some animal took a liking to the coils... ).

Does anybody have any idea where these drivers may have come from, and maybe (its probably too much to ask..) the T/S on them? And if you don't know, is there somewhere else I should ask? Thanks in advance!!

The model numbers suggest Radio Shack. I don't know for sure, though. (Planet10?)

How do they sound?

Actually they sound suprisingly good, for what looks to be cheaper drivers. (But I don't have much experience with older stuff, who knows.) They sure don't sound like anything I've heard recently from Radio Shack! Gobs of good sounding (read: clean, not deep) bass from a relatively low excursion driver (9v test bumps it about 4mm), and a sparkling treble I don't usually associate with cone tweeters.

I asked my dad, who's speakers they seem to have come out of, and he said that he thought they came from a pair of Zenith Allegro 100's, does that help anybody?

*grin* There are some very good cone tweeters out there. (Ask Planet10. He knows more of them than I do.)

Try putting them on a baffle, and see how they sound then. The bass should improve. (Especially if it's a big baffle.)

Aaahhhhhhhhhhhhh; think they are onkyo, probably from early 70's l'd say, 'bout the time onkyo started moving some of its oem i.e; speaker component manufacture activities off- main land japan to korea forming a korean subsidary with local investors, [ tie since severed] now known as korea omyang specialising in car audio speaker manufacture, supplying , mainly hyundai and aust ralian G.M and possibly FORD from down under too, last l heard, good luck with the t/s paremeters, cheers TC

I actually thought they were Onkyo myself, just because they said "ONK" and that's what popped into my head

I was actually thinking about trying some OB's with them, as I love the OB sound, and w/o the T/S, its fairly impossible to put them in a suitable BR or sealed enclosure. How big is big? would a half-sheet of 1/2" MDF each be ok? (I have an extra laying around, bought it thinking it was 3/4" )

Half sheet will start the dipole rolloff around 300hz, so use with a subwoofer is probably a really good idea. (That's a 4'x4' piece, right?)

You could probably turn these into a killer 3-way really easily. And if you went active, I bet you could really get killer performance out of them.

Roll-off around 300hz you say? (yes, it would be a 4'x4' peice)

That seems awful high to run a "subwoofer"....but I do like the idea of turning this into a 3-way! With it being a 6" midwoofer, what would you suggest for the bass? And it gets plenty loud and sounds rather good with a Sonic Impact T-amp off baffle...and I have a plethora of the little things! I might look into building an active crossover and doing just what you suggest -- going active!

My 3-way PA system uses Parts Express #290-380, which is a Goldwood 10" PA woofer. It's inexpensive, and plays very nicely in a 2cuft box tuned to 40hz. (Make sure you use a BIG port or vent.) I cross over at 200hz, but anywhere up to 500hz should be just fine. They can play very loud, but they also play very clean at low volumes.

This looks like a very exciting project! I hope it goes well for you. Keep us updated...

A 48" square baffle sitting on the floor and perpendicular to it should have an F3 of approximately 56 Hz. Of course not knowing the driver's response, there's only one way to find out how they will perform on it.
