i wish all people goes to office for a couple of years and then go back to their business after it - to live under the rules and regs they have passed while in office

Mark.
We use a contact cement dry method.
We contact up all part we have found a special roller for not a great cost that will roll contact cement or glues and leave little or no bubbles.

We are normally doing 3-4 sets of cabinets at a time.So we let all parts dry 100%
This normally takes a day to apply glue to all the veneer pieces for all these cabinets plus the cabinets.

Then the next day we start applying the top and bottoms to the cabinets. With a iron.

This way we can control the veneer location, some say takes longer, but as we do a look at veneer as a art sort of speaking.
We take pride in getting the veneers to match up were we can really the front and the top of the cabinet is what I try for a make 100% when I can.

Matching the front with the top is what takes the time in layout as well.
We like to look at a speaker does not matter what size or shape as a finished piece not just a box and throw veneer on and put it out the door.
Press yes we have looked at them but as we try to produce the cabinets by hand and control the final look as much as we can.
With a press you set up and walk away as well you can not do a full wrap as we do.Larger pieces still with wrap if we can and the customer like the look of the wrap around if not and they want sharp square corners that is done as well.

Look down 3rd pic down we do the cabinets for the Philip.

Going to try a few different glues the Unibond we have on order and will try a few things with them as well as the cold bond.
But in general we perfer heat contact.
Some say slower but depends on what is you method:D

Speaker builders

After that last post, I don't believe I am even in the same ballfield, but I make special cabs for such things as Video mobile studios, operating theatres and courtrooms. We are now starting on production of rotary un-powered cabs for the guitar players with vintage-sound requirements. While we are on the subject, does anyone know where to get a 18-40 watt Mosfet amp that can be installed in an unpowered cab that will take balanced line-level and not break the bank? If we have to make the DC power supply ourselves, thats cool, but I would rather get it complete. Time is money. The TV trucks all come with Anchor Model 1000 powereds and they don't last very long. Can't get those special transistors for them, either. Thanks!

Hi Mark,

I am a hobbyist woodworker and I have only made a few pair of speakers. I use the old fashioned method of clamps, cauls and veneer cold press glue because that is all I can afford. The picture below is my latest creation. It has Seas Excel W15CYs and Raven R1 ribbons with a Dennis Murphy designed crossover. The veneer is curly cherry, the front baffle is quarter sawn hardwood black cherry. The cherry of course, will turn much darker to a rusty red with exposure to light.

Sorry I don't know how to do the thumbnail image so I have to stick the large pic into the text but it is my contribution to this thread.

Nice Pic

I'm getting the impression that people think that a veneer press is complicated. It isn't. FOr us canadian guys it is a trip to your local princess auto for a cheap vacuum pump and the fittings. Then liberate some nice old lady of the plastic that she uses to cover everything. Some silicone and duct tape later and presto chango you have a bag and a press.

Been doing it for 10 years. You can lay up 2/3 of an enclosure with ease. And if you are a bit crazy you can fit and figure a complete layup. Just a little more risky. Al's method of seeing as you layup is smart. I liked the grain matching. It shows good attention to the details.

I have had a love hate relationship with contact cement. I've been around long enough to watch the bond fail on the projects that go through my shop. So where there is chance for catatstrophic failure I use the press and the tougher glues. I do all PLam doors with the press to. Never had a failure. I have had failures with the contact cement.

I did an Horn load tower Alls Bill Fitzmaurice for a client. I did it with a longer path length and a larger mouth to augument the bass. THe cabinet was made with a 6" radius edge on the sides and top of the front baffle. I wrapped the veneer so that the baffle flowed over the top and around to the back. It was cool. I've got tto get a picture of this one. I cheated on the back using a 1/4" oak ply. But Sweeeet.

I'll see what I can do about pics.

Still sucking back saw dust!

The number is growing.

Your site looks pretty good sdclc126 ( Scott I think )

Mark

Actually not my site - I'm not Scott Stein - but I plug his work here - he did the driver coutouts on my speaker baffles and I'm very happy with the results.
