Oil based pigments doesn`t work well mixed with shellac.

As dhendryp stated, alcohol soluble aniline dyes works fine, for best results make the first and last steps without the dye.

Incompatible does not mean it cannot coexist. .

It sounded to me like you were saying they don't mix when in fact that's exactly how you get petroleum and water to mix.
