I have a KEF Ref 105.3 that is making a warbling / burbling type of noise. The other speaker is fine.
It appeared to be coming from the top driver. I took this out, and tested it on its own, and it seems to be fine. On putting everything together again, the noise returned. It appeared that it could be coming from the central coincident drivers - I didn't get time to test this out of the cabinet. There are two potential causes. 1. RF interference: this speaker sits between a Pronto and its RF receiver, and next to an equipment cabinet (it is permanently wired in, and difficult to move to another location for test). This doesn't seem likely - to be audible, RF would need to be amplified; to get back to the amp through the crossover, it would need to be noise on OV, which presumably would then pervade the other channel. 2. A dodgy cap in the crossover (no visible sign of problems with the crossover). There is no scratching, and the cones push in freely, so I don't think there is any voice coil damage (though obviously I can't tell with the tweeter). The speakers have never been used at a particularly high level (and have worked fine until recently). Can anyone give me a steer for my next fault-finding session? Thanks |

Have you swapped amp channels to the speakers to see if the problem moves? To be honest, this sounds much more like an amp problem than a speaker one.

Hmmm. I was sure that I tested this. Turns out that it's the PL2 mode of the Denon AVR3805 receiver. Sorry for the trouble.
Have you done anything with those B139's yet? |
