Default Speaker Placement Advice

Hello there,

I am in the process of wiring my soon to be HT room for speakers, and have a query regarding the placement of the side surrounds. From that I have gleaned, they are best mounted on the wall, approx. 2 feet above the seated listening position (2 ' above ear height ?), and slightly behind the sofar/chairs. A door opens the wrong way, such that the "ideal" position is unavailable-I will need to either move the position forward of the sofa (bad), or move the speakers to a vertical position above the door (approx. 6'10" from floor). Is this second option acceptable, if I have adjustable brackets that I can point slight downward?

I thank you for any advise you can offer. Sorry for the wordy post..

Bruce

Greets!

According to Dolby, for a single surround speaker/channel you want it 20deg behind the listening 'sweet spot' (110deg from the on axis centerline) and angled to point at it. Vertically, they should be at the same height as the main's tweeters, but this assumes either a large screen or at least the monitor being spaced up so 2/3 screen height puts it somewhat above ear level. In most HTs though this isn't the case so it needs to be up high enough and angled such that it aims down at the opposite wall/floor junction with them crossing just over your head in the 'sweet spot'.

Bottom line, above the door probably isn't too high unless it's a narrow room, but you'll have to 'do the math' to make sure if you want to ideally locate it.
