Hi,

Think of them in terms of what they do.
An instrument speaker is designed to cover the portion of the audio spectrum that the instrument does.
Studio professional speakers are supposed to be accurate sounding so the engineer can mix the music according to them.
Hi-Fi seems to mean "made for the home"
Car speakers are often designed with the very small listening environment in mind.

They all work on the same principals. Think of them like automobiles. Some are made for speed, some for luxury while others are made for off-road use. They all use internal combustion engines.

because of their different intended uses, they each favor a particular feature that is often at odds with something desired for another application.

for instance, a MI or Prosoud speaker design typically stresses efficiency and power handling. Great for filling a venue, but accuracy and response smoothness may suffer. The distortion is often part of the desired sound - guitar speakers for example

Car speaker designs take into account that they will get significant bass boost from the small volume of a car. Put them in a living room, and that boost is gone and bass response of the system can suffer. A home speaker in a car may have too much bottom end due to cabin gain. Accuracy of many car speakers leaves much to be desired, although there are some surprisingly good ones.

Home speakers don't need to get as loud and won't generally be driven as hard as MI speakers, so efficiency and power handling can be traded for accuracy, smoother response and deeper bass extension. Play a bass guitar through a home system and it may sound nice, but if you try to gig with it, you'll fry your woofers, and maybe tweeters if you crank in a bunch of distortion. They need a lot more power than a pro driver to reach the same volume but usually cannot handle as much. An electric guitar may sound odd, especially if you are used to one of the highly colored guitar drivers.

The above are generalizations, there are certainly drivers that don't fit this mold, such as low distortion pro drivers that many prefer for their home systems and subs that work well in a car or home.

Hope this helps
