if i am going to the trouble to flush mount my 6.5in drivers & bevel the edges of their 'bookshelf' boxes,
i just found out by searching that there is a issue that relates to edges & how sound is defracted, will the protruding edges of this particular driver be better off removed? (it is layered paper) i note most high end drivers surround is as flat as possible, with the rubber as close to the edge as possible. is it worth the effort/risk of damage to remove the edges? |

Usually they glue the edges to the surround, so if you do choose to remove the edging, be very very careful, as if you are not, you will remove the surround from the frame.

If the size of the edging is small compared to the wavelength of the highest frequency the speakers will reproduce then it will have no significant effect. Thus for tweeters it is important to keep things smooth, but for woofers it's mainly just for cosmetic reasons (assuming it doesn't obstruct the tweeter...).

thanks MrEvil - the discussion that prompted the question was far too detailed to have discussed basic realities such as wave length.
it makes sense that the woofer wont produce frequency that is short enough to be interfered with, and since the woofer will be flush mounted - it wont interfer with the tweeter cheers! |
