Default diy surrounds

so... I'm a newbie here...
I have remodelled my basement, and prewired for wall moutned surrounds.
i planned to use my paradigm titans on the walls, but they are fairly heavy and big... aka wife things they look too big on the walls.
the other issue with them is the mounts from paradigm have a hard time supporting their weight. third issue is one of the walls that was pre wird for surrounds is steel stud... pretty flimsy for such a heavy speaker(about 10 lbs each).

so I was goign to attempt to build come cabinets and pick up some drivers.

I am handy and own lots of tools, but I am pretty much looking for a recommendation on some drivers for surrounds that are reasonably priced. I would like to get away with 100$ for the whole project (ie build 2 surround speakers).
they idealy would be 5 pounds each and should have a pretty decent sound. I do use a 5 ch stereo mix for tunes, so these arent just used for movie rear channel effects.

can anyone recommend wood type, and drivers (that can be bought in canada)? Even better if i can build these for cheaper... but I would spend up to 100$ for something that has great sound... I realloy dont know where to start.

My first thought was a pair of WR125S in 7 liter boxes but that's outside your budget. You need cheap, small, light and great sound. I suppose you could try a variation of this.

The Aura drivers are available in Canada from

Would you provide more information about your setup? What amp, what are your other speakers, etc.?

Someone on this forum made some dipole TB W3 871s. Dipole surrounds are preferable, or I think so for surrounds. Try building some dipoles, maybe with the Hi Vi B3N or something, you'll have plenty of money left over though.

Just some suggestions

Josh

Does this mean you don't use SACD or DVD-A? If you don't then you may be ok with dipoles and/or mismatched speakers. If you do use surround music you may want to try and match your other three speakers. Dipole surrounds are great for movies.

wow, everyone, thanks for replies...
josh, I particularly liked your 13$ thread.

I remember when I was 17... and I certainly didnt have your ambition.

to reply to other comments...

my setup is:
paradigm cc170 centre
pdr12 sub also paradigm
i have the 2 titans that I used to use as surrounds, and then i have paradigm phantom fronts.
so all parardigm... to some that is good, to others that is awful.
I bought all this years ago, before there were forums like this, and before I knew better.
the setup is driven by a yamaha rxv800... and 90% of the time, i watch digital satellite through the system.
other 10 % is split across movies and music.
when i do listen to music, i use a 5 channel stereo setting on the amp, basically it drives all speakers equally... stereo is a dumb word for it, I know.

so, i could buy 2 paradigm atoms, these are smaller and lighter and a good match to my system.... but as I said, I am handy, live within 12 miles of a "speakermart" and would love to try to DIY.

i dont care about dipoles much... i recall "mirage" dipoles were all the rage when I bought my system about 8 years ago.

i will research the leads people have given me so far, i have heard of solens before... and i think at that time it was good news...
