Default how does one make a super tweeter

Hi everyone,
I am wondering if anyone can give any advice about how to go about making a super tweeter to add to a full-range speaker system (a DIY ACI Alpha limited project that has a 37-18,000 Hz frequency response +/- 3db). I have read rave reviews of the Townshend Audio Maximum Ribbon Super Tweeter, but a couple grand seems kind of steep, and I was hoping somone on this forum might be able to provide a newbie with some advice about how to make something similar for a lot less money, i.e., possible ribbon drivers to use, how to design an appropriate cross-over, etc.
Thanks very much
Chris

Do a search. A couple of threads exist for building true ribbons. I believe they are part of the ESL . . . alternative forum. I know I contributed to one of them.

Talking How to make a supertweeter

You take a mild mannered tweeter. Coat it with blue spandex and a cape. The you put a big S on the front.......at least that's how I do it.

I think I see a photoshop contest... Does anyone have a good picture of the classic Radio Shack on top of the speakers add on "super tweeter"?

Possible supertweeters are from Accuton (D20 diamond tweeter), TAD (ribbon supertweeter), Tannoy (add-on box that you put on top of your speakers), muRata (spherical supertweeter), Sony and Pioneer. Maybe forget the last two...

There's also some others probably.

If you have the sensivity of your system, we could recommend which one is better for you.

Thank you for the helpful reply. The sensitivity of my system is around 93db.

Take a look at the Fostex drivers on the Madisound page. They have several high efficiency bullet supertweeters with responses well past 20k. I believe they also have a range of prices from "possible for mortals to afford" to "honey look what I bought instead of a new furnace" prices. They are still less than the diamond Accuton.

I too doubt that anything above 20k is useful, but that's coming from somebody who can't come close to even that now days.

You might also want to get your hearing checked, to see just how high you can hear... I would be surprised if your hearing went much beyond 18khz.
