I am thinking of a pair of horns for a full-range system in a house with small children who may be intersted in dropping things into the throat of the horn...
Will a screen or grill cloth over the mouth of a horn affect the output or sound of the speaker?

Fear of punishment is, trust me, part of the plan.
But that doesn't change the curious nature of kids! Hey, I wonder what will happen if I drop this little stuffed bunny down the hole in this big box... If I were to make these, it would be a semi-permanent install due to the hassle of moving them for cleaning... hence the question. After all,

I would mount that thingie in a way that it could be removed later on (when your kids are old enough to take care).
I don't know how its sonic impact actually is, there will be one for sure but I don't know how much. But my imagination tells me that it won't be severe since it is placed where velocity is low and pressure is high. If you have a look at professional horn drivers then you will notice that some have fine screens at exactly that place. Regards Charles |

At the mouth I would have thought so.
Steve edit: unless you were on about putting a screen deeper inside? |

I am thinking of a screen to cover the whole mouth and driver area. Some have argued (with empirical evidence, no less) that a speaker grille is audible. My electronics are nowhere near good enough to show it up.

As was mentioned above I think, so long as you made it removable for when the kids weren't around and/or could be trusted to to damage them...
