Default KLH 6 question

I have a pair of original KLH6 speakers.
I power them with a sansui au-707 amp (2x100w) in a fairly small room.
I really like the sound but thay lack the high freqs (as I think). I listen to 70'th rock bands and live recordings.

So the question is what to do?
I was thinking about changing the tweeter maybe.
Or can there be a problem in crossover?

Anyway I'd appreciate any advice.

p.s. I'm capable of changing the drivers though I never did it before.

First question: are the speakers in stock form worth something in collector value? If so, don't touch 'em, go directly to Ebay and use the proceeds to fund your next speaker.

Otherwise, I'd start simple and replace the no-doubt-rotting capacitors in the crossover and see if that fixes the problem before embarking on major redesign and surgery.

1. That speakers are in excellent condition and are $50-$100 on ebay. the thing is that I like them and they are give me good memories ;-) So I'd rather leave them for mysefl.

2. Some place in Internet mentioned that thease speakers have oil-based capacitors which are very good and don't loose the quality as fast as regular capacitors. But still that should be double checked.

I probably wouldn't fool around with oil capacitors in this application (they're fashion accessories)- I'd probably start by swapping out for the same type of caps originally in there and see how that works, then (cautiously) swap for something like a decent polypropylene. I say "cautiously" because speakers voiced for one type of cap will often sound different but not better with another type. And the cost of doing this stepwise is minimal, so why not?

So if the capacitors are oil-based - which ones should I replace first?
Thank you.

IIRC, the 6 had wax paper caps. Replace 'em all, especially the ones in the tweeter feed.

Nice, thank you for the information.

I'll do it as soon as I figure out how to remove the cloth on the speakers

Meanwhile replaced the leaking output caps on the amp - didn't help the highs.

It would be my guess that these speakers didn't have particularly good high frequency response to begin with so you wind up diddling with caps to fix a problem that doesn't exist.
