Hi all,
There I am, relaxing, listening to my Getz/Gilberto record on my Thorens 160, via a simple budget technics SS amp and mission 721i speakers. I am enjoying the music big time, the sound is pretty good and I am pretty satified. But nevertheless while I dream away on this wonderful Samba jazz record I start wondering how much the sound would improve if I build my own speakers for about (max) 300euro/pair. I did some surfing around and found out that it would be possible to buld decent speakers for around 300euro/pair. But the following questions pop up 1) would a pair of good DIY speakers of 300euro/pair improve the sound quality significantly compared to my missions 721i? 2) a BLH with fostex 206E (full range) drivers seem very good and an obvious choice. But, maybe a 2 way system or three way system for 300euro/pair would even be better? maybe TL ??? So there you have it, will it be worth to spend 300 euro...or should I stick to my missions. if I decide to indeed spend 300euro and start building...what should I build, or better, what would you build if you could spend only 300euro !! Thanks and cheers, Jacob |

Love those 60īs Getz bossa nova records! Also try and get Ella Fitzgerald sings the Jobim songbook in vinyl or even cd.
As for speakers I havenīt heard the mission 721 so I canīt comment. However IMHO speakers tend to be the most critical factor in most systems because they deviate so much from neutrality and can sound so different . In a budget system however system matching is essential to negate problems. For this reason sometimes a budget speaker may sound better with a budget amp than if a better speaker is put in its place. Another problem is that with diy speakers there is no chance to hear them before you have spent your money and time on them. All this just as warning - you have to be careful of your choices. I would say there are a lot of nice speakers you can build with 300 euro.Budget drivers do not necessarily mean budget sound. Personally I would try and go for the most efficient design for that money then invest in a good gainclone or a simple SET amp to complete your system at a later stage. |
