Default Recommendation for a "metal" speaker?

Going to build my brother a set of speakers. He is a HUGE rock/heavy metal fan and loves his music loud. He wants these speakers to be able to play very loud, but also maintain and extremely clean sound. I recommended a line array but his wife isn't going to allow that. A floorstander will be just fine, but nothing over 48 inches or so in height. Full-range would be preferred and he doesn't need subsonic response. I'm guessing an F3 of 40hz would be plenty.

His budget is $1000 with electronics and materials.

Any kits or designs out there that meet this goal? He prefers clarity over raw SPL, but would like both if he could.

Thanks!

The conventional thing seems to be to recommend decent pro style high efficiency speakers. The pi speakers kits come to mind. These are a good bang for the buck and would play very loud and clean.

I have to say, most metal I've ever heard on really clean speakers sounds truly awful. So, while it may seem like that's what he wants, I really don't think it is.

A little compression isn't a bad thing sometimes. This is sort of a weird recommendation coming from me, but I think he'd be better off with some largeish but conventional sealed box speakers, or possibly ported but average efficiency. Maybe one of the larger offerings from humanspeakers is worth considering. My old EPIs always sounded good with metal. Or a simple large 3 way with a 12" or 15" woofer and pioneer drivers.

Looking for some used klipsch heresies or JBL L100's is worth a try.
