I'm starting my next project...
I've got a pair of Raven R-1 ribbon tweets left over from a Zalytron Aria 5R kit that I built some years ago and have since dismantled. I'm wanting to build some new speakers incorporating them. They're simply fantastic, but alas, they have spoiled me and now I'm in search of a midrange (and dream of a bottom end) that can keep up with that kind of speed. I will be running the speakers with active XO's which have given me the confidence to go ahead and do this. The idea of TL's intrigues me but that doesn't mean I'm nailed down to them. (I like the idea because I could have a 2-way system that actually goes virtually all the way down) My goals: Fast, open, dynamic, articulate, fast 2-way Phase/time accuracy would be nice Minimal woodworking (the raven will just sit on top) Good bass response but not boomy What I don't want: Ported Fatiguing (sp?) sound Larger than roughly 8x12 footprint Budget: less than $500 for everything, less is better. Other than that, i don't want much! I've thought of the Accuton drivers, but they seem expensive given the fact that the frequency response need massaging from the XO to be smooth. The adire extremis looks very interesting, but can they really have a nice open and fast midrange at 3khz while pumping out 35hz? Any ideas at all on the driver? Needs to cross over at about 3khz. Sorry for the lengthy post, any ideas on any topic would be greatly appreciated! |

OTOH I think "good, fast" response 3k-35Hz is stretching it a bit... Cheers |

I also think a 3 way may be more what you want. They are inherently easier to make 'non fatiguing' than a 2 way IME, and the ribbon will sound better if it isn't pushed too hard. I do like my focal 8C/ACG3 ribbon 2 ways, but they are crossed a bit lower. Perhaps a morel mdm55 dome mid, or a small 3-4" cone would do it. It doesn't take much spl, as there will be significant bandpass gain.

I dont really think you need to go 3way unless you have a tweeter that cant support a crossover below 2-3k
truely the extremis can cover up to 5k, but I suppose going that high will cause more distortion. I've got mine crossed right at 3k and they sound very good. I'm actually working on a TL project using extremis myself. I started my own thread and here's a link Extremis6 Transmission Line Here's a picture of the stuffed line with the side panel removed

I built up a raven r2/excel w18 TL in d'appolito configuration and they sound great.
The excel w18e00 sounds natural, fast and has good bass charactaristics - it is the best midwoofer i've ever heard and it is cheaper then the accutons. regards ijomojo |
