I will keep it short this time. I have decided on building a two-way speaker. This will be made for speaker however I want to use very good components. I have decided for the tweeter I will use either scan speak 9900 or Morel Supreme 130. For a two-way speaker that has one tweeter and one midrange, which midrange would you choose to complement either the speakers noted above? I would like the very best.
Thanks for the input |

I don't know either of those units, but if my guess of the Morel unit is correct that it is a 130mm unit, then you don't really want a midrange and a 2-way will be nicer.
3-way is not automatically better because there are more phase changes taking place (amongst other things).

richie00boy: the 130 in the Supreme 130 refers to the outer diameter of the mounting plate. The size of the dome itself is only 28 mm. This scan speak is similar in this respect. Both these units tweeters and only resolve high frequencies. I will need something to resolve the lower frequencies.
I think you misunderstood me. I mentioned that I am building a two-way speaker not a three-way. I have narrowed my high frequency speaker down to one of the two that I mentioned above. What I was asking for was advice for a complementary driver to handle the lower frequencies. |

Hi eitanwaks,
I'd recommend doing a quite a bit of reading here http://ldsg.snippets.org/index.php3 Your question is a bit too general, there is really no such thing as the best midbass or whatever driver. It depends on what you want. richie the supreme 130 although being a 130mm face plate, has the dome offset towards the bottom so that it can be mounted as close to the mid driver as possible. Supposed to be an exceptional tweeter! ![]() Tony. |

OK I see now. Why not just make the faceplate smaller?!

Wintermute: thanks for the reply. The site you recommended is very informative. In fact, I've gone through it several times, always finding new and more information. The problem is that there are too many choices. I started this thread exactly for that reason. The two tweeters that I mentioned are the most available high quality tweeters that I can get. This limits me in the high-frequency department.
I guess what I really wanted to know is how to the scans speak compared to the morel speakers in the mid-bass range. Also, of these two companies, what are the most highly regarded mid-bass drivers? |

Power handling!!!! nominal power handling with 2.2Khz 12db/oct crossover 220W.... smaller face plate means less heat dissapation, and therefore lower power handling. eitanwaks, yes I know what you mean, too much choice can be as bad as not enough. I have limited exposure in this area. I have only listened to the morel MW144's (and then in a very raw form). I'm currently designing a new speaker using them. So far I'm very impressed. I'm sure they will be a lot better once I have a lowpass crossover on them, but even driving them full range + a tweeter they sound very nice (except on whitestripes "Elephant" which sounds terrible) I haven't listened to any scanspeak drivers (that I am aware of). Dont forget about the scanspeak 97 tweeter, its exactly the same as the 99 but with a different face plate. People have said the 99 sounds "hotter" then the 97, so if you prefer to stay away from the hotter sound get the 97 instead. I use the 97 and like it lots, I pair it with a seas excel W15CY001, they work really well together. I would like to build a two way using the scan kevlar driver but have absolutely no need to do this so it would be a waste of money haha.
