Default Kit suggestions please

I know this has been covered many times...

But, I have a question regarding just the kits available on zalytron.com

I am new to speaker building, but not electronics or woodworking.

I would like to build a pair of speakers that will work about 50/50 ht and music. I would like enough bass that I wouldn't have to have a sub, but would add one eventually.

I've heard that Hiquphon is an excellent tweeter manufacturer.. but I have no brand loyalties yet.

Which kit at zalytron under $500 would be a good place to start?

On a similar note, has anyone dealt with zalytron? How do you pay them? I just don't like giving my credit card info over e-mail/insecure sites etc...

Check out Dennis Murphy's site. He has paired the Hiq' tweeter with several different woofers.

Never dealt with Zalytron but their designs often seem pretty generic and hastily designed. The Dennis Murphy designs appear to have a lot more effort behind them and a lot of happy fans.

I've built the Ellis 1801 with the Hiq' tweeter that is my main speaker for HT/music. I also have a set of MB20s that are smaller but have very nice bass, sounding very good without a sub.

Thanks... It was actually Dennis Murphy's site that pointed me to zalytron in the first place.

It seems to me that the majority of DIY retailer sites are not really equipped for e-commerce. But I guess this is a necessary risk given the alternatives.

The 1801's look quite appealing, however the price tag would drop the WAF too much for my first project.

You could also have a look at some of the higer end kits at www.partsexpress.com or some of the kits from www.madisound.com.

Thanks for the links...

What about plans... Not necessarily a kit. Any suggestions for a better than average MTM under $500 that the plans are readily available for?

John Krutke ("Zaph") has a nice looking MTM on his site. Zaph is an active poster here and his designs are well-respected.

Very nice. I think that is the way I am going to go!

Does anyone know if Zaph (or someone else) experimented with the sealed floor-standing version with a powered sub base?

I know two people have built the floor standing vented version, but nobody that I know of built an integrated sub yet. I still may do one myself some day. (still eyeing up those new 10" metal cone Vifas)
