Default Loudspeaker Cabinets

I am looking for a company that fabricates floor standing cabinets in the US at good rate. I want to open the box when I get and simply cut holes. Does any one have any good sugestions?

I don't follow your reasoning. There are 2 main reasons for building your own speaker (cabinets).
The first is to save some bucks by doing your own carpentry.
The second is to get the exact size, shape, colour etc to fit your needs and match the drivers elected for optimum performance.

Neither of these goals is likely to be realized by purchasing a pre-made cabinet. You might as well just go whole hog and buy a ready made speaker.

JW,

Don't listen to those two. You are probably asking this because you are not able to produce a nice looking cabinet. I am in the same boat I can design and do a mock up but when it comes to the finished woodwork, I ask others to do it.

There's no shame in not having the avails or ability to produce the entire project yourself. Look in the yellow pages under cabinet makers and go talk to them after you have your design in mind.

Just remember, you are still doing as much of it yourself as you feel comfortable with.

Hey Island boy, Yourself is one word!

Maltese, I think he meant a custom cabinet not one off the shelf.

What speaker are you trying to build?
Do you want them to design the cabinet, too?
Or are you looking for generic cabinets to stuff some drivers into?
Do you want them flat-packed (unassembled) or already finished?

www.partsexpress.com has a nice line of flat-packed cabinets but I don't believe any are floorstanders.

The last couple of AudioXpress issues had someone advertising this service, you might pick up a copy or go to their website and maybe you can track down the advertiser.

Otherwise, it would probably be best to find a local cabinet maker so you don't have to worry about shipping some big heavy cabinets with the potential of damage.

Please do, there is so much to learn on this unit. What time does the ferry get in?
Were having lamb hocks done in a garlic and rosemary sauce tonight. Bring an appetite, there's lots. Which is good 'cause I hear you eat a lot.

Actually Jason, I'd like to hear what Jason Watts is planning. The next thing you know, he will have a nice little system. In a couple of years maybe he will have a table saw, router, screw gun and the rest of the things needed to put together his own system. I don't think we should discourage him from starting this way. Heck, I get someone else to build my cabinets.

Gentlemen, please consider that people's skills and expectations differ. Besides the fact you may need hundreds of dollars worth of tools, time and space to build the boxes you want, a big part of the fun and enjoyment of this hobby is the design possibilities, and the choices you make. For the most part, we're really just assembling manufactured items anyway.

Jason, there are probably a few companies where you could buy pre-made cabs, but you'll have to do that search yourself. I'd check Parts Express or Madisound or LDSG http://ldsg.snippets.org/sect-16-vendors.php3

A local cabinet maker would be a good place to start for custom work, making changes and adjustments easier. Another option might be a want ad in the trading post section. Or send me an email.... altho I'm located in NY...... xonasis2000 (AT) yahoo

When buying products, the bitterness of poor quality sometimes remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotton. But when you do it yourself, sometimes the complete opposite is true.

Default Cabinets

My DIY interest is in the design and not necessarily the construction. I enjoy setting down with a pencil and paper and seeing what I can come with. I like the physics and mathematics behind the sound. Believe me I have built my share of cabinets though. My carpentry skills aren’t that great anyway. I do some work for recording studios from time to time and want their items to look factory made not like they are made from an unskilled carpenter.

No you don't ... who built the cabinets for your current DIY speakers & your gainclone (or the boards for your gainclones) -- not you.

DIY takes a broad spectrum of levels. From fabricating everything yourself (althou there aren't many here who could fabricate their own speakers let alone a DAC chip, semi-conductor or tube). Kits, semi-kits (that is what we are talking about here), are all valid DIY pursuits.
