I have read many of the previous posts on open-baffle systems, and I have decided to build one.
What I'm looking for is the "sound" of my old Maggie's, without having to play them as loud. There was an article in the 1/1994 issue of Speaker Builder (by Warren Hunt and Joseph Janni) on an open-baffle system using a pair of Madisound 1052DVC drivers in an MTM arrangement. I believe these drivers are still available. However, according to the spec sheet, they have a really bad suckout between 700 to 900 hertz. Believe it or not, they actually use these drivers up to 2500 hertz in this design, yet "beaming" is not supposed to be a problem. Does anyone have any experience with this, or are there more suitable 10" drivers for this app;ication??

I just put together an open baffle with 12" Oxfords from an old organ, salvaged cross overs and some RadioShack paper tweeters. I must say that I am not having a problem with bass, (my Castles go to 65Hz--these play WAY deeper). The midrange is clear and open, the highs much better than they should be. Very efficient (I find Iam listening louder )
My personal experience with Magneplanars is pretty limited. A friend had a pair (2.5's ?) driven by Audio Research amp/preamp. I suspect the Maggies were better in the midrqange, but that was along time ago (10 yrs +). I have to believe that better drivers would give better results than I have gotten, But I am completely impressed by these. Maybe do a search for Promethius(?) loudspeakers. Also there is a link some where here to JLE(?) labs with baffle construction istructions and impressions. |
