Throwing some more speaker projects around in my head, mainly another set of line arrays, and was wondering what you guys thought about these Dayton planars? I see they've been redesigned a bit; better cosmetics, higher sensitivity and I think I remember reading that it can be crossed lower. I've almost got my set of line arrays done that utilize 10 Dayton RS5 per side with a single Fountek JP-2.0 ribbon, but after seeing the new Dayton planars I kind of want to build a TRUE set of arrays. I could throw some buyout 4.5" Vifas that I have in my current arrays and the Founteks and sell them to my brother for what I have in them, then design and build a set of arrays using 12 Dayton RS5s and 9 Dayton PT2-B per side. I already have the RS5s because I bought 20 for the speakers and an extra 6 just in case, so I'll use 24 of the 26.
I designed these line arrays I'm working on now after Dr. Griffin's Needles array that I heard at the Dayton Ohio show this year. For a calculated seating distance (which is where I do most of my listening) these single ribbon line arrays can have their crossovers designed so they are utilized for that seating position. Do you guys think I'd be better off finishing these arrays with the RS5s and Founteks or go ahead and build a true array? Am I crazy? Explain! Thanks! EDIT: On a side note, how do you guys feel these compare to other tweeters for doing a bookshelf speaker, or possibly and MTM floorstander? |

I vote:
build the big array using 8 PT2's per side and how many midwoofers you can fit. /hehe On a side note, how do you guys feel these compare to other tweeters for doing a bookshelf speaker, or possibly and MTM floorstander? The PT2 type of planar shines in line arrays but it wouldn't be my first tweeter choice for a simpler design, ie .. I'd rather use a good dome tweeter instead. |

mazeroth,
I too am interested in others thoughts on those as I plan to use that tweeter crossed first order at 10K to take over from the little Monarch/Coral 4"alnico drivers I have. I hope you get good responses. Better than what thylantyr said about using a single one anyway. The big meany would rather use a dome. Cal |

Check with Rick Craig at www.selahaudio.com and see his posts at Madisound and Parts Express. He is in the process of building a line array with the 5 inch PE RS drivers and I think Fountek ribbons, but he has lots of experience with the PE Dayton ribbons.
By the way, I say go with the full array of 8 ribbons vs. just one. |
