Question Do you stuff a bass-reflex speaker?

I have two questions.
1. Do you stuff a bass reflex style speaker?
2. What do you think is the best 5 1/4" woofer?

Thanks.

1. In general, no, but sometimes a little on the walls helps.

2. How much money do you have?

"if you take cost into account" is the proper way to phrase it.

Stuffing damps the resonance of the driver and can reduce the output at resonance by up to 3db.

It can help SQ if the enclosure has a hump in the response around resonance but in a bass extended design it can reduce lower bass output.

You always stuff or fully line a reflex speaker if the woofer is running wideband, ie, higher than 300 Hz or so. If you don't internal reflections off the cabinet walls back to the cone will cause all sorts of peaks and dips in the response. On the other hand, for a pure sub that doesn't operate above 100 Hz you neither stuff nor line, as internal reflections are not a concern and SPL will be lessened.

It depends on the assumptions you made for box QL. For a "normal" choice of 7, line the walls but don't stuff the box. You can play around with stuffing if your measured response (or impedance) doesn't hit the target predicted by the T-S parameters.
