What tweeter specs should I be looking for if I want to build a 2 way loudspeaker with the Dayton RS150S-8 6" woofer (link above).? Just looking for a tweeter with the correct frequency parameters that will match with the woofer so that when I build the crossover I can keep it as simple as possible... Can anybody help please? |

Strictly based on theory, I'd be crossing over no highger than about 2800Hz (to stop the mids beaming too much) this will give you about 6db down at 45deg off axis. However Based on the freq response curve of the woofer you may want to make it a bit lower as it starts to get a bit ragged after 2Khz...... you may have some problems with the spikes in the upper freq resonse of the woofer too, they look pretty nasty!
Again based on the theory that you should cross the tweeter over 1.5 to 2 octaves above resonance (ideally, but you can get away with one octave if necessary) you should be looking for a tweeter with a resonance frequency of around 933Hz or lower. Obviously you want it flat down to the crossover freq, and prefferably quite a bit lower now depending on what crossover slopes you are going to use, power handling needs to be considered as well. Others with more experience than me (ie I'm just starting to build my first crossover) might be better able to say, but IMHO this driver looks a little bit hard to tame for a first time crossover builder Tony. |

The Dayton silkie is hard to beat i think it is 275-070
That RS woofer is not one for a simple crossover, you are going to need a multileg notch filter to tame the resonances. pperhaps you should buy a kit and see how that goes, in the meantime do lots of reading.

Accepted practice is to cross over where the woofer is still flat on axis and no more than 6dB down at 30 degrees off axis, using a high enough LP slope to tame any HF peaking. For the tweeter you can go with a crossover as low as 2fs with a 2nd order HP filter, going progressively lower with higher order filters to as low as 1.2fs with a 5th order.
