Default Behringer measurement mic issues

I'm using the Behringer ecm8000 mic and trying to do some nearfield non-linear distortion tests. The problem I'm having is the mic clearly overloads, giving me abnormally high distortion levels. Is this to be expected, and if so is there any other cheap alternatives?

What are you feeding that poor mic? 150 db's or what? I think any mic will distort - and go kaput - if you drive it too hard. Why not add some distance - the distortion will be still measureable.

Sounds like interstage electronics being overloaded to me, the mic pre or whatever it's feeding. Can you give a few more details about your hookup?

No clipping on my soundcard or preamp. I'm testing right up at the horizontal plane at the top of the surround. I recall Linkwitz commenting that the Panasonic electrets overload at modest spl's. In any case, this is happening with modest drive levels ~1-3V, not 150db levels.

I'd test at 1m, but I run into problems with drivers of different diameter and room effects and reflections etc.

Just wondering if anyone else has the same experience.

I'll take a last kick at the can and pull one from 'My List of Past Mistakes'. Low phantom voltage?
