Default Grain?

Hi,

What does grain absense mean in the midrange of a loudspeaker? Has that any sense in an electrostat? What causes grain and with which recording does it become more apparent?

Thanks in advance

Mike

Grain is just one of those words audiophiles use. Consider it to mean that the sound has a characterstic similar to the grain in a photo.

I would think that grain would be a characteristic of any electronic component and be caused by out of band noise affecting the signal. Perhaps solo violin would be most revealing of grain.

That's my opinion. There are others.
