Default tangband tweeters?

I'm a newbie looking at making my first diy speaker. I'm looking at trying to use less expensive parts initially. I'd like to get someone's opinion that knows what they are doing. I've just read stuff so far.

I was thinking of using the peerless 850234, http://www.madisound.com/850234.pdf 5.25" midwoofer with a tangband ts25p606 tweeter, http://www.acoustic-technologies.ca/images/ts25p606.jpg crossed over around 3000hz.

Do you all think this would work? I've heard/read somewhere about tb tweeters not being the best, quality control or something, but the fr plot doesn't seem to be too bad for $10.

thanks,
brady

I was thinking of starting with a first order crossover. Will this work? Do I need to be concerned about power handling?

The power handling could be an issue.
Don't try to wrestle too much much out of the tweeter or it will soon let you know!
P.S. Why not consider another reasonably priced (but more expensive) tweeter instead. The HDS 5.5 is a lovely woofer and a better tweeter could result in a more enjoyable result (just my two cents worth)

well, i wanted to try building my own and experiment around without much money initially invested in the drivers. once i have some experience and am more familiar with all the factors to take into account and know what i want, then i'll make something a bit pricier.

the 5.25" i found is only ~$13 and ~$10 for tweeter

It will sound good for 23$ total

You could also do a second order on the tweeter, then leave the woofer as first.. Just needs a small inductor across the tweeter as extra.

I like TB and have ordered a few drives, none had any problems. But other members would know more..

I second Thomas 997 idea, have at least second order on the tweeter.

I would order a tweeter from madisound also to save on Shipping fees. You may consider some of the tweeters in the Sale page.

This woofer you choose seems like a real nice choice. But consider that you won't have much deep bass from it. Still, it is a good project.

Since you're looking at Tangband you may want to consider the W5-704S. I know it's few dollars more but you may be able to make up for it on the shipping. Maybe? Anyway, I've played around with it and it's a nice performer for the $, and is easy to work with. Shouldn't be too hard to come up with a 2nd order XO with those two drivers. Just MHO.

I agree with those who suggest 12dB Xover. Easier on the tweets. Also note the tweeter is a 6 ohm so you will want to factor that in in when you order your caps and coils.

thanks for the replys

yeah, it won't be big on bass, that's for sure, but that's okay with me for now.

as far as using a 12db xo, i guess i just add a 2nd order high pass with a 1st order low pass and use the impedence of the drivers taken from the fr plot at the xo point in the calculation?

from my reading so far, if i have 2 octaves between the tweeter resonance and the xo a 6db xo would be okay. Is that right?

the w5-704s looks nice, but i allready found a tweeter on madisound. It is the HiVi K1. It has a Fs of 800 hz and the curve looked decent. It looked good to me, thought i'd see what you all thought. The db of the tweeter is 2 or 3 more than the woofer, so i guess i might need to put a lpad if its too bright sounding.
