<Introduction/story>
I like to party with friends (who doesn't?) and often we play some music (friends old sony amp my old speakers). Some time ago we went on holiday in a free-standing/detached house so we turned op the volume quite high and it was really fun, until one of my old speakers fell of the table... It were crappy speakers anyway but it's still a pity. Last party we used my friends old sony speakers but the speakers didn't like it when we turned up the volume and one of the speakers died. Now I would like to build some good DIY speakers but I don't know which driver I should use. With my budget (150 euro/200 dollar total) I think 2-way is the way to go but I still need some advice with the choice of drivers. I would like them to be durable and not too picky about what's driving them. I hope to reuse my old Awai enclosure (see here , don't ask what happened with the tweeter). It's dimensions (approx.) WxHxD: 25x43x21 cm Apart from that, I'm gathering components for building a gainclone, and I will probably use this speakers to test it. When the gainclone is finished and if my budget is larger, I will make some better speakers to use with it. The gainclone will be powered by a toroid with 18V secondaries and I've read that because of that it's better to drive 4ohm speakers. In short I would like DIY speakers that are: Durable (I should probably make some grills for it, for party's and the like) Good value for money, should be able to produce a nice sound and not distort too much on high volumes. Affordable, my budget is around 150 euro's (200 dollars) I don't care if it's the most ugly speaker on the planet They will be replaced by better speakers later on My questions: Can I use the old enclosure of the broken speakers? Should I go for 4ohm instead of 8ohm? Which drivers to use? This is my first DIY speaker project, quite a challenge! PS. I'm sorry if my English is a bit confusing |

Hi,
being in the netherlands you could have a look at Monacor drivers. Good value for the money. Example : TQWT Mindstorm The Mindstorm is as simple as it gets but youīd have to build new enclosures which will still be within your budget and hey itīs really not complicated. Especially together with a few buddies... If you donīt need that much bass you could put the drivers in a sealed enclosure but probably wonīt sound as balanced as the crossover is only 6dB and might not work in that setup. Forgot to mention: Your old speaker enclosure is almost 22l which would be perfect for a ported enclosure for the SPH-176.

is the peerless CSX 217 T any good, there's not a lot of information about it on the internet.
And what to use for mids/high then? That SPH167 looks nice, although I haven't found a shop in the netherlands that sells monacar drivers, but maybe I'll get my drivers in germany because they are a lot cheaper there. |

I havenīt listened to a whole range of speakers but got the chance with the SPH-176.
For the money itīs a brilliant driver like others from Monacor as well. Iīd guess the W17(3)0S-series from Visaton would be another good choice. From Peerless Iīd go with a CSX-176T for a 2-way. You see nothing than good reviews and will find a lot of suggestions for combinations/crossovers. (Peerless pipes for some serious bass) Flatline , an example with the CSX-217R
