Default Help with crossover basics

Hey all! I've got a few questions about designing your own crossover networks. For some reason, I just can't find definitive answers searching, or reading on the net, at least, not in the last day or so...

1. When you design a crossover, do you use the Znom ohm, or the Re: Ohm value? For example, the drivers I'm looking at say Znom 8 ohms, but, Re of 6.3 ohms.

2. When adding an L-pad, does one have to compensate for the added resistance? From what I can tell, if you use a L-pad you don't need to worry about this? I don't know why/how this could be.

3. Is there a common rule of thumb for component selection, like, use foil film for the high end, and large gauge air core inductors for the low end? Maybe foil film for the both?

4. As a followup to 3, for low value capacitors, would one recommend more expensive components?

Thanks all!

1. use znom,Re is measured at dc

2. you can find the equation for L-pad on the net. the equation is
set for the znom of speaker to keep it the same(8ohm will
stay 8ohm. If the L-pad is store brought and has the same ohm
rating then dont worry about it

3. use foil film for tweeter and midrange use large gauge in-
ductor for low end unless, you crossover very low then use
iron core. I would not use foil film as bypass cap at low end,its
not in path,a lesser cap would do

4. It's really up to you
