Default Ribbon tweeter suggestion

Hi

I'm looking for a ribbon tweeter to go with a dome midrange (probably Vifa D75MX).

x-over freq would be around 5000-6000 Hz, at least 2nd order, maybe more.

Max price i'm willing to pay is 199$ per unit. I'm looking at

LCY 110: 199$ (I can have it around 150$)

Aurum Cantus G2: 179$
or
Aurum Cantus G2si at 89$

What should I buy?? Any experience?

Should I go with the Aurum G2si and pay for better x-over components or go with the LCY.

Any suggestion for the Dome midrange, Morel MDM55 can be a possibility.

Oh yeah, I would like to have approx 92 dB sensitivity so the Vifa and LCY combo should be nice, the sensitivity match... The Aurum is 95 dB...

Thanks
F

Default Re: Ribbon tweeter suggestion

Gary,

Check out the Fountek JP3's at Madisound. They are superb sounding as are all of the ones you listed. Properly implemented of course. I'd recommend the MDM-55 over the Vifa. It's a great sounding driver. Check out www.Selhaudio.com for some designs using it. Rick is the crossover master of the mid domes. Line arrays too!

The Fountek is the same than Aurum Cantus but different name, am I right?? At 60$ each, it's a no brainer. Thanks

The website doesn't work right now.

The morel seems great, I much prefer the Vifa looks though... I could use a pair of morel in MTM with a fountek for a 95 dB sensitivity... !!!

Although very similar, the Fountek and AC are definately different.
I made this misrtake also and was corrected.
Now, they may sound the same- I don't know.

I can recommend the 2si. With your high crossover, it will work fine!

Perhaps no one but me cares, but think about this. The Fountek are for sale "while supplies last." The ribbon repacement kits are $18 bucks each, and Madisound is not stocking these beyond immediate needs. The replacement procedure is quite complex.

Translation: if you damage the ribbon, you either make your own or have an expensive paperweight.

For $20-30 I would much prefer to order a G2si from Andre at e-speakers.com. The replacements are much cheaper, much easier to accomplish, and there are no indications that the G2 is being phased out as yet.

I guess it all comes down to whether you expect to have this new loudspeaker 18 months or 10 years. With the effort I put into these things, I want them to work 10 years down the road!

It's my understanding that the new Fountek ribbon replacements are backwards compatible with the current design. I have 16 JP-2's in my Omegarrays so I was very pleased to hear that the new replacements are indeed backwards compatible.

I do agree that Andre at E-Speakers is very good to do business with. He was a major supporter of the Iowa DIY event I hosted and I do appreciate it.

The higher crossover opens up a lot of options tweeter wise.
