Howdy, new here and a novice, just moved into my flat whose living room is square (18ft x 16ft , 10ft hgh) This situation apparently is far from ideal. How do I make the best out of my situation for a home audio speaker set up? I am using 4 speakers at the moment (not surround sound) would I be better off in just investing in 2 better quality ones(thinking about a diy project for this)
Which leads me on to my next question, why are so many speaker boxes designed rectangular when it is said that ideal designs should have unparallel sides? Is there an ideal speaker box design. ?

That´s a horrible room, but with clever solutions things may turn out ok anyway.
You could consider a dipole speaker which will give less boom and cleaner sound with good resolution. If you use standard box speakers I suggest you do not place them on the same wall, but on each side of a corner instead. This will excite the room modes in a smoother way. For even better results (with boxes) you could consider a tower with woofers low and high on the baffle as this also have a good effect on room mode excitation. Think of a WMTMW or WMTW... or something like that. "Which leads me on to my next question, why are so many speaker boxes designed rectangular" Rectangular is easy and not bad at all if done right. Good luck! /Peter |
