Question Cheap 1 or 2-way speakers project

Hello everyone, this is my first post here I love this forum and read it all the time. I'm an amature in the DIY scene. I've currently built 2 speaker systems. one is a 2.5 way vented floorstanding speaker sporting components of a Boston Acoustics RM9, and an infinity Kappa Perfect 12.1DVQ 12" subwoofer. and another a tri-sub, sealed box, for my car. anyways, to my question...

I want to build a pair of speakers for my little brother for x-mas (not the speaker spec, the holiday!) and my budget is about $30. I have all the wood and tools, all I need are the drivers and crossover. what would you guys suggest for this little project? does anyone have a design I could follow? he listens more to rock and pop ****, so the best accuracy isnt the focus, so much as SPL. I want to build somehing with a little thump to is. I was thinking of implimenting a pair of Boston Acoustics 1" silk dome tweeters which I already have, but I need a midbass driver.

Also, any online store you all know of for buying raw drivers would be great.

THANKS ALOT GUYS! I look forward to being a part of this community!

-Josh

Hi,

Why not build a small array from these drivers:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showd...number=269-570

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/pshow...number=269-702

A lot of people here have built arrays using 8-24 of the 4.5 Pioneer and from 2-32 of the Onkyos. I built an array with 9 of the Pioneer 4.5 and 4 of the Onkyos. I let the 4.5's run full and did a 1st order cap for the Onkyos at 10K. For $18 in speakers for the pair and another $5 for the caps, they sound wonderful.

I'm going to build some rear speakers out of these with three 4.5's on the front baffle and three each on the two sides for a wide dispersal.

Good luck

Ralph

Best of luck

other than those pioneers, even the cheapest speakers I can think of will cost more than that once you ship them. If you have a surplus electronics shop where you live check there.

If you willing to spend abit more the mcm 55-1170 6.5" and 50-595 tweeter are the cheapest things I can think of that are supposed to be decent. Theres always the tangband w3-871 but the supply seems to be dodgy now.

Default Dear Josh,

after the Tangband W3-871S has already been mentioned, I would recommend to have a look at the Cyburgs-Needles:

Cyburgs-Needle for Tangband W3-871S

I have also a compact version of the needles, but I didn't have time to translate the plan by now. But If you are interested, I could do it in the next days. Here is a german thread about them (just for an impression):

I don't know, if the Visaton FRS8 is available in USA, this would be even cheaper and would not need a notch.

Nice greetings, Berndt

We are doing a project like this right now. I have twenty Sea Scouts building bookshelf speakers using the PE Pioneer buyouts mentioned above and the Dayton neo tweeters (PE#275-030). They are organized as MMTMM and will go in a .75 ft^3 ported enclosure with folded miter & rabbit construction. Oddly enough, the price will be about $30 for a pair.

Speakers=$16
Crossover & terminals=$10
Wood=$4

We auditioned them on Thursday and they sound pretty good.

May be the case but my last transaction was reasonable.

I bought 198 NSB's last week (plus the tweeters)... here's the conversation.

PE lady: OK Mr. Manning, theat will be $351.00 with shipping.
Me: Hey, you have to help me out a little, like on the shipping. This is for Sea Scouts, for kids...
PE lady: Well, the shipping charge is only $47.00.
Me: That's what I mean, isn't that a little high.
PE lady: Mr. Manning, the shipment is nearly 300 pounds.
Me: Oh.

Not much you can say when you buying drivers for a buck a pound!

alright guys. I bought 10 of the 4" cheapies, 6 Fiva 4.5" (infinity buyout), two of the cheapy tweeters (i have 2 silk dome bostons, and 2 poly dome bostons as well) and a Dayton 10" shielded dvc for a different project.

My question to you is .. If i use 4 of the NSB's, 1 Fiva, and 2 of the cheap tweeters in each enclosure, what should i set my x-over at and should i build or buy? i'm confident i can build one just fine, i dont know what i need to buy (I apologize for my ignorance) can someody please lay this out for me? what kind of enclosure (vented or sealed) interior dimentions? anything? I can't afford a mistake.

I was thinking of going 24"x8"x7" giving me a total of ~.78 cubic ft (22l) and porting it in the back. does this sound sufficient?
