Smile Creating a 3-way reference speaker Scan-speak

I am trying to build a really superior hi-fi speaker, and I am looking into a design with Scan Speak Drivers. Currently, I am planning on a 3 way, with 2 boxes (1 for mid - high and 1 for sub), using the following drivers:
1) D290/9700
2) 18W/8545
3) 25W8565/01

I don´t know if the setup above will produce the best results. I am considering changing the 18W for a 15W/4531G and changing the sub for a 21/W8554.

My aim is to get a box with Qtc of 0,5 -> 0,6 (for the woofer with a volume of nearly 90l), mainly for Classical music (the box for the 25W is kind of big and I am not so sure if it is a good fit)

Does someone know about other subs that can give this kind of refinement below 200USD each?

Just wanted to let you know, your proposed design seems very similar to a design by Edgar Beers called the eVe II. You can find more information on it at http://members.home.nl/edgar.beers/ under "Projects". This might be useful to reference during your design stage. Good luck!

You mention making this best of the best etc.

I have no problems with the tweeter you have suggested.

But if this is scan, Id go with the 12M/4631G00 for the midrange and the 26W/8861T00 on the bass. Crossover say 200-300 in the bass and 3-4k in the midrange.

These are scans latest drivers and should be the best they know how to make so far.

You could try the D2904/71 tweeter too. Either way it should sound excellent.

Part of the three way is being able to use those smaller drivers for better dispersion and linearity in the higher frequencies. But still keep good bass because you have a dedicated woofer. From what I have read about the 12M, is that its supposed to be superb, but so is the seas M15CH.

Hello caenot

See GeersEve project. That´s exactly what you´re looking for:

Drawback is that it needs expensive components.

enjoy

Default Tks for the tips

Tks all for the tips.. amazing is that by using the 12M I will need the same box as the 18W. Where can I find the reviews in the driver?

I have never heard the Seas, but are they really that good? That may be an alternative to save some cash.

Rocka, do you have any good sources for drivers/parts in Sao Paulo?

"I have never heard the Seas, but are they really that good?"

I used scan speak and dynaudio drivers in the past. Now I would not consider anything else but Seas and Accuton in the midrange. Yes, Seas is good with a big G.

So, if you use the word "reference" as a word for someting that everything else should be measured against, then you need low distortion. Seas has lower distortion than SS in general (the best of respective brand).

Hello from Poland

I thing so 18w8535 is better choice for a mid. 18w8545 is pojected as a midwoofer for 2way loudspeaker in BR.
18w8535 work wery good in a closed box and have a excelent "midrange"- warm, sweet but clear . I like it very much.
For "no compromise" bass I sugested 25w8565 in a closed box.
But You will need a really good amp...

PS

Sorry for my english ......

Yarpen,

How big is your closed box for the 18W8535 working in midrange only fashion?

I find it hard to compare differences in similar driver sound without taking into account the filter function.

Scan-Speak is an excellent brand, but I'm glad someone mentioned integrating some Seas drivers into the mix. A lot of times you'll hear the words "reference speaker" and automatically assume this is Scan-Speak/Focal only territory, all other brands need not apply. Seas has a very good line of drivers (especially the Excel series) and should not be overlooked. Aside from the fact that the comparable Seas driver is often 1/2 or less the price of a Scan-Speak/Focal.

15M4531G and 12M4631G will do good jobs as mids .
I think the 15m4531g might be better if the price is considered .
