Polish loudspeaker manufacturer Tonsil has been doing some serious research& developement!
Allthough the article is from july 2000, I never heard anything about it.

interesting. I do remember reading something many years ago about headphone membranes being grown from organic materials. Was Grado working on something like that?

How about building a membrane out of carbon nanotubes?

I'm afraid TONSIL is facing financial problems constantly, since the fall of communism in our country. The speaker has never been brought to the public. Tonsil was present at AudioShow 2004 in Warsaw last weekend and announced to show the speaker, but the company did not....

You got me interested in it

I'm sure someone did a PHD on that subject in the institute mentioned there. I'll try to dig that up...

it ain't that bad. I just found out that in 2004 tonsil did get better and is planning a market invasion. The transducer is supposed to be patented, so a copy of it from Taiwan or PRC is rather unlikely. I'll try to find some more info tomorrow.

I hope its a lot better than the Tonsil speakers I have at home (circa ~ 1992), because they are not that impressive IMO.
