Hi there,
This is my first post and I'm sure I'll get flamed for the general nature of it, but I'm looking for help in an area that I have absolutely NO expertise. ...yet! I have the opportunity to buy the following from a friend: -6 X 4 Ohm, 6.5" JBL mids that came from JBL Control 5 monitor speakers -6 X 8 Ohm, 1" JBL tweeters that came from the same speaker -2 X ? Ohm, 8" JBL subs that came from somewhere The problem is that we know very little about the original speaker combo other than: Response of 50 Hz to 20 kHz, 175W max, X-over @ 3 kHz, Effective box volume is ~1,500 cu inches (1,200 total box volume, minus speaker volume, minus the volume of all the other stuff that's presumably in there, plus a 25% gain in volume perceived by the speaker through foam insulation). The 8" is a complete unkown, although I'm guessing they are 4 Ohm due to their beefy nature and "automotive" look. My question are: -does anyone think it's feasible to build a quality set of front speakers with what I've got here? I've got a Yamaha HTR-5490 that puts out 100W RMS and is stable at 4 Ohms in the front channels only if the others have at least 6 Ohm impedence. -would it be possible to build a decent crossover for these speakers knowing what I know? HELP ! ! ! |

Take mids use one from 80 up to 3kHz, X-O to tweet. Take other two use in parallel from 80Hz to whenever the FR of single drops down on its own - probably 200Hz. use one 8 inch below 80 Hz... from 80 - 20kHz - put in one sealed box, and 8 inch in own sealed / vented box - depending on Thiele Small specs...
or use two mids and a tweeter for a left, right and centre channel That said - difficult to judge outcome or applicability of solution without TS specs... or for that matter design the thing... BTW if you don't have TS param.s go elsewhere, if you want good sound... they'd have to be dirt cheap to make it worth it otherwise JBL web-site, might have some info... Here is site with cool links and software to see if it will work... A book like Martin Colloms hi performance speaker design or Laurence Dickason ? Loudspeaker Design Cookbook is good idea... http://www.speakerbuilding.com/ |

Unless you have the T.S. parameters you have no way of building even remotely good speakers with the parts you have.
