I have made a front panel out of thick alu channel which is 6 inches wide. The cutout for the mid-bass is 122mm, so this should allow most 5" speakers. I have KEF B110s already. I could get anything that might be better, e.g.
SEAS L14RCP Morel MW144 Focal 5K range Jordan JX92s Any other......... I want the most bass that is compatible with a 5" speaker. I can go up to 30 litres. I don't know how to calculate the optimum enclosure size using VAS Qts and Fs. I don't even know what relation VAS has to the optimum cabinet size. Where do I go from here in choosing a really good mid-bass and then working out the best cabinet size to give good sound and maximum bass extension? Thank you for any help - I'm struggling here and want to get it right before cutting wood! Andy |

Hello there - I hadn't got as far as the crossover. I was starting with choice of mid-bass and cabinet size. Hopefully I would find an existing crossover design on the Net - there are quite a few for this size of driver. I need to select a driver and a cabinet size before I can make the box! Andy

Generally, one does not start making the box until a COMPLETE design is chosen. You're getting ahead of yourself.

I don't have any measurement programmes - I'm quite willing to look at one. I'm coming back to boxes after years with Maggies (moved the hifi into a smaller room) so didn't have to build any boxes. Previously I built quite a few. But I assumed that the crossover wouldn't have much to do with the bass extension and size of box - it's octaves up. Right or wrong? Andy

If you want to look at it that way, which is not the best approach, at the very least you have to pick a woofer, which at 5" will probably be in a ported box. The box size and port dimensions come to bear. It's much easier to build a box around a woofer that it is to find a woofer to fit a previously made box.
Download a free copy of WinISD for modeling the response of woofer and box. |

Hello Bill. Downloaded the programme - I remember this years ago on the net. Looked through the 5" drivers, and the ones that seem happy in a 20 litre ported box are the Morel MW144 and the SEAS units - L14, W14 and also Monacor SPH135. So looks like I could go ahead with a ballpark figure of 20 litres. Next step is to look at some crossover designs with these drivers. The SEAS units have a nasty peak, so I'd have to have a good crossover to cope with that. The MW144 looks pretty flat and easy to use. don't know much about Monacor. Andy
