Heres somes commentary from PE message board...

Person1 Your HiVi system was one of the best I heard. Too bad the woofer is out of production. Any thoughts about trying one like it that's still available? You seem to have a great ear for designing your crossovers!

Person2 Wow, thanks Jeff! From the review sheets I got back, it didn't seem like it faired very well. Nate and Matt gave me some interesting feedback as well - they were saying that as they moved their heads around, all sorts of weird things were happening with the response and imaging. This leads me to believe I have some lobing problems that need to be addressed. I had similar experience as I moved around the room while they were playing and others were critically listening. Because of this, I was not expecting much in terms of positive feedback.

I measured it and designed it in the position they'd be in for listening in my listening room. They measure pretty darn flat in there. And for the two nights I had them to listen to before coming down to the competition, I thought they were really nice... all things considered. Anyway, the response looks pretty flat in my measurements.

There's all sorts of sacrifices in a two way. The bass (extension as well as quality) from that driver (Hi-Vi SK8R) is pretty darn impressive, IMO for an 8" in an acoustic suspension alignment. The limitation with a large driver (8") in a 2way is poor midrange (generalities here... relative to a similar smaller driver).

The mids were a little thin and distorted in spots, IMO due to the breakup modes of the kevlar driver. And from where I was standing in the room during their demo, the sound was terrible at times. As I moved around the back of the room, there were definetly some odd things happening. Apparently, you must have been in one of the "sweet spots" . I really think that it was necessary to use a 1kHz crossover, despite the daggers that were shot across the room at me. When I announced that, it was like everyone was watching a really nasty horror flick. With agressive slopes you can accomplish a lot in removing low frequencies from the tweeter, but often the sacrifice is what we saw happen at the competition. On the other hand, maybe I'll just blame the room we were in all-together Cuz they sound great in my listening room, independent of where I move to.

Long story short, thanks for the complement Jeff. I would definetly be interested in looking at one of the new Hi-Vi drivers that are currently available. When I first opened the boxes up, I was a bit skeptical as to the sound quality of my SK8R's... but after dropping them in and hooking them up, my opinion has changed for the better. I also have an old discontinued pair of Hi-Vi dome mids as well. Perhaps I need to mate them into a small 3way, similar to Jim Holtz's JH3 Reference speakers. The wheels are turning...

Person1 My initial impressions were that the HiVi was really clean sounding, but then I started to hear the weirdness too. I was sitting (and standing) toward the back of the room. Like you said, maybe there was some lobing or other phase issue going on. Possibly this would have been masked in a smaller room by reflected energy.

I have to say that I was impressed that the MDT-30 survived a 1k crossover. I wouldn't have thought to try that.

And I know alot of poeple out there have the TN28, as PE sells out as soon as they get stock (still waiting till november to get some )

We have several designs using the M8a driver.

2-way TM and MTM, and a 3-way MTMWW dipole.

None use any HiVi parts other than the M8a.

If you're interested I'll post links.

I've used the F6 in my center channel and am impressed with the driver for the price. Decent bass but very good mids up to 4K. I've hammered it with power and it is still alive where Audax have died before. Try it you'll not be disapointed.

Has anyone tried the smaller aluminum 'woofers', in particular the m4n?

I was hoping to try the M3N in a sealed micro-monitor, with a Peerless neodymium dome tweeter, in a project I plan to call "The Shorties". I hope to try lots of new things in it, like a crossover I actually design myself, that will get +/-1dB response, and perhaps a veneer-finished little cabinet. Should be an interesting little project.
