Default Replacement drivers for Royd RR2

Hello,

Replacement drivers for Royd RR2 required.

I’m a complete novice looking for advice on replacement mid and bass units for Royd RR2’s.

The reason for the replacement of the Royd drivers is that I’ve managed to blow all 4 drivers (for the second time). I love the sound of these speakers but they do not go loud enough, long enough.

I know I can purchase Royd’s own drivers @ (£123)ea but was wondering if it would be possible to use Morel, Seas, Audax, Vifa or any other drive units.
I’m looking for drivers that can handle more power than the original drive units but sound very similar.

The Royd drivers have exactly the same physical dimensions as the Vifa P13wh-00-08 (5.5 inch) and same power handling requirements (40w).

The width of the cabinet would not allow anything larger than a driver of 150mm diameter.

The cabinet itself is 865mm x 192mm x 178mm (HWD) and has two chambers of approx 10 litres per chamber.

Morel MW144 DPC, Seas H1141-08 and Audax HP 130Z0 Hda (very cheap) and Vifa would all fit size wise.

The Vifa and Audax only handle 40watts, Seas 80w and the Morel 150w.

I realise that any change of drive units from the original would also entail new crossovers.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

Update on the existing Royd RR2's.

Tweeter is Vifa D26NC-15-06 housed in a sealed chamber.
Capacitor 2.8 (400v) to positve of tweeter, 4.7 ohm resistor to negative.

Cabinet has two individual ported compartments each approx 10 litres. Port size is 35mm dia and a flexible tube of 340mm.

Midrange and woofer are 5 inch Royds, each housed in its own compartment. No crossover components to midrange or woofer.

Advice on replacement drivers and crossovers would be welcome. Buget £400 -£500.

Can anyone help?

I've had these RR2's sitting here for the past year. Can anyone please help me with the selection of suitable Mid/Woofer drive units and crossovers for the enclosures.

Thanks

Hi,

I've been away from diyaudio the past year ........

From what you say finding replacement drivers should be relatively
easy - the complication comes with the crossover required.

Drivers that suit the Rega schema exactly would be more difficult.

I'd expect the the lower of the two bass units to be different
to the upper bass unit - but they could be identical.

Fitting different drivers is going to give you a different loudspeaker.

If you spend a lot then I suggest you use a documented design.

On a budget you can afford to experiment a little.

First thoughts are a 2.5 way based on Focal drivers.

The 10L box tuning frequency is 28Hz - seriously overdamped tuning.

If memory serves, the Royds have impressive sensitivity and don't need much grunt to go loud. Just how much power were you putting into them? You might find a shift to a speaker with better power-handling would be wise, or you'll probably end up frying all the drivers again. If you did that though, you'd probably need to build a new cabinet, and certainly a new crossover as you point out, so it'd be a case of designing a new system from scratch. You might want to check out some DIY kit speakers like the Wilmslow Audio ones, or possibly a variation on the Thor TL (preferably not using the original cabinet though, and certainly not with the original amount of stuffing which kills bass response).

Best
Scott

Default re Royd speakers

Hi,
Tried to e-mail Dennis Waugh but didn't succeed.I also have a pair of Royd speakers,A7's where the fabric of the speaker has decomposed over time.I tried sending them to a factory that reconditions them, but it didn't succeed. If I want a replacement pair of 5" low-mids to fit into their place,is it impossible?
I have since bought a new pair of complete speakers including cabinets, but I was just considering the possibilities of overhauling the pair of Royds.

Any ideas?

thanks,

Paul

Hi,

they can be overhauled into something that works well,
but not the same as the original speaker, unless you
are lucky and find very near equivalent new drivers.
