Default Any 5 1/4" midbass users? esp Peerless.

Hi

I'm looking for a small Midbass to partner with a Vifa D27TG-35-06 tweet to make a set of nice computer speakers. I will be getting the Vifas to use in my main HiFI speakers as a stop gap and will upgrade when I can afford to, at that point I wish to build these computer speakers. My criteria are:

Asthetically they must look the part, they will be in the livingroom and there will be hell to pay with 'the other half' if they are too big

Acoustically, I want something smooth and detailed, I can use a sub to improve the bottom end if neccesary but I would rather not.

Amp wise they will be getting about 40Watts RMS (Zen based Class A design)

Cost wise, I'm not wanting to spend silly money, just something that will complement the Vifa well.

My current thought (which changes weekly) is the Peerless 850488, or 134mm HDS driver without a phase plug.

This is a pretty good looking driver IMHO, the response looks ok, I would ideally like to have a go at a transmission line design (about 36"-40" high would work for me as a floorstander) and it would allow me to make a very narrow cabinet which would be good.

I've never actually heard that driver though? is it any good? is there anything better for similar money (I'm in the UK) anyone got any other ideas?

would this driver be suitable for a TL design?

Thanks

Hi Puggie

I've used the Peerless 850488 on a few speakers and it's one of the nicest 5" drivers around. Has a superb midrange, upper bass with ample bottom end but not room shaking bass but more than adequate for the size, a bit more bass than the B&W DM601 when using a single woofer. Very well behaved and I haven't heard any bad comments about it.

There was some tests done on the Linkwitz site and this driver came up trumps against some much more expensive competition. If I remember it had extremely low distortion figures.

Another driver is the Vifa P13WH-00-08 which doesn't go as low but is a highly respected driver. This is used in the TLb which is a TL.

I haven't seen any TL's using the Peerless 850488 not to say that there aren't any.

Cheers

Excellent so at least I know I'm not starting with a dud!

I will have a play with modeling TLs next, and maybe look at Bass reflex designs.

Anyone else care to comment.

I suppose you know about Bob Brine's 850122 TL. Ok its a 7" driver (wider cabinet) and a CSX (not HDS) Peerless driver. But it is a TL. The HDS and CSX lines have very similar freq responses - but of course sound quality can be a different matter...

Hi Puggie,

I'm a newbie, so you can probably ignore me, but how does the Monacor Monacor Sph 135 AD look to you? It's a Kef replacement, and only £30 +vat from here:

https://secure.wilmslow-audio.co.uk/..._Units_17.html

I'm thinking of using it as an Acoustic Energy Aegis One driver replacement for a project, but I'm so new to this subject I'm not sure if it's as good as it seems to look to my uneducated eye....

Another speaker I saw that is only 130mm diameter, is a car speaker made by Skytronics - 902.420. It's £30 a pair from Ebay including postage, and has the T&S data on the website in a .pdf. www.skytronic.com/uk as well as on one sellers ebay page.

I'd like to know what you or anyone thinks, as I often learn more from people on forums than by trying to read books.

Cheers.

Gary.

if you can get them, the Audax ap130g2 is quite good, and dirt cheap.

failing that, a pair of off the shelf Gale mini monitors, they look the part and keeps the Vifa's for hi-fi use. OR another project!! he he he he.

it all depends on how much have you got to spend? and how good do you need your computer speakers to be?

where in uk are you? coz ive got both the Audax and a set of gale's and im not using either at the moment!

see you later bud, steve.. ..

I'm in Guildford.

My computer speaker need to be pretty good because I'm fussy (and I work in a studio so ATC SCM100ASL are my 'daily reference'). I do a fair bit of music editing on the PC so something pretty good is needed, they will get about 40Watts RMS from a Zen inspired Class A amp design.

Money wise I'm prepared to spend upto about £40 a driver (about £100 all in VAT P+P etc). The Vifa tweets are a stop gap in my HiFi speakers (Psychosteve, this is the 'other project' how much for the Audax, my friend has the aerogels and they are quite impressive ), I'll upgrade them in my HiFi speakers then the Vifas will be put to use in my computer speakers, I may also have a pair of the Vifa 3" domes around so something with a 140mm basket that does bass well but not mid may be possible too and I'll go 3 way .

Puggie, have a listen to the Audax when you come to pick up the volts. Its far from perfect at the mo but I think it has potential for sounding quite nice.
