hello all. This is my design for a 5.1 curved array at 6' from the listener, any comments or ideas would be appreciated. Also I’m still thinking about how to crossover the speakers. The tweeters I’m using each have a bass blocker on them. Should I keep those on each speaker, or wire them up without it and then just use one for all 16 tweeters? Thanks, gon.

You really do not need to curve your arrays if you are operating them so that the listener is in the near field. In the near field the sound radiates perpendicular to the array so it flows outward from the source with minimal reflections from the ceiling or floor. It does not exhibit spreading sound in the near field. Hence, no need to curve your array--in fact you severely limit the sweet spot when you use a concave curved array.
See my near field line array white paper for details at: http://www.audiodiycentral.com/resource/pdf/nflawp.pdf Jim |

Hey Jim, I’ve read your paper, but I’m not terribly technical. What I’m doing is this, I noticed that I get really good imaging outdoors. I’m planning on building this set up out side, and I haven’t found any papers on how sound behaves outside as compared with a room – I have noticed that bass just seems to disappear outside. Considering I won’t be moving this setup and I’m going to listen to music with it, are there no advantages to curving the arrays? Also, are 8 4” NSB drivers sufficient for a single array or do I need more? Considering that I’m doing this outside, would a larger circle than a 6’ radius be better or worse for imaging?
Thanks, gon |
